About butane

Butane (formerly the Fedora CoreOS Config Transpiler, FCCT) translates human readable Butane Configs into machine readable Ignition Configs.

What's new in 2.27.0

Starting with this release, ignition-validate binaries are signed with the
Fedora 44 key.
Breaking changes
- The build script now requires a subcommand (ignition, ignition-validate, or ignition-validate-cross). Sourcing the build script is no longer supported.
- Build and install are separate steps with explicit targets (ignition, ignition-validate, ignition-validate-cross, install, install-ignition-validate-cross, install-grub-for-bootupd).
Features
- Accept Butane YAML configs in addition to Ignition JSON, with automatic transpilation at boot (#2235)
- Support reading configs from /run/ignition and /etc/ignition/ in addition to /usr/lib/ignition/, searched in descending priority order (#2221)
- Add support for virtiofs
- Support loading Ignition config from a labeled device via ignition.config.device and ignition.config.path kernel command-line arguments
- Allow deleting a disk partition while creating another partition with number 0. (#2234)
Changes
- Merge Butane config transpiler into the Ignition repository; the butane CLI is now built from the Ignition source tree (#2235)
- Replace GCS client library with direct HTTP calls to the GCS JSON API, significantly reducing binary size (#2045)
- Refactored the Makefile and build script to match the Fedora RPM spec: separate build targets per binary, with VERSION and linker flags passed in at build time
- build_blackbox_tests builds a blackbox-specific ignition binary with make
- CI and GitHub Actions updated to build via make ignition and make ignition-validate
- Fix test script compatibility with Go 1.26 which removed the -go flag from go tool fix
- Improved documentation for the flow of Ignition across clouds.
Bug fixes
- Fix giving disk partition number 0 to get the next available slot. This caused the disks stage to fail since version 2.20.0. (#2234)
- Fix disk partitioning race condition where the kernel is already aware of the changes before running partx, causing a fatal error. (#2234)
- Add x-initrd.attach to crypttab entries to fix soft-reboot with LUKS (#2219)
