About RenderDoc

RenderDoc is a free MIT licensed stand-alone graphics debugger that allows quick and easy single-frame capture and detailed introspection of any application using Vulkan, D3D11, OpenGL & OpenGL ES or D3D12 across Windows, Linux, Android, or Nintendo Switch™.

What's new in 1.46.0

This release contains a significantly revamped tutorial for getting started with python scripting - if you have not already tried it, python scripts in RenderDoc are a good way to automate workflows or tailor your personal use of RenderDoc. It also includes improvements for python development including automatic generation of python stubs for IDEs like VS Code, and integration with an external python debugger.
Get started at the Python docs if you are interested and follow along with the tutorial there.
NOTE: currently AMD's official drivers contain a reported bug that may cause any shader debugging that depends on multiple threads to fail to debug correctly. You may also encounter problems with using VK_EXT_descriptor_buffer as noted in the v1.40 release notes as well as other instabilities that have been reported.
Binary builds with installers, zips and tarballs are available on renderdoc.org.
Main highlights
Improved python script editor
The python script editor now supports having multiple scripts open as well as editing UI extensions and pre-provided example scripts within the editor itself. The autocomplete has been significantly improved and while it is not IDE quality for simple scripts it will be easier to navigate the API and understand what functionality is available directly from the editor.
Python debugging support
RenderDoc now supports integrating with an external IDE like VS Code to debug the python code while it executes within RenderDoc.
This workflow is explained in the documentation and if VS Code is already installed with python support it is very easy to get up and running.
Rewritten python documentation
The Python docs has been rewritten to be easier to get started with and step you through how to write simple scripts in RenderDoc. There are a number of new examples demonstrating different ways that the RenderDoc python API can be used to solve bespoke problems and perhaps give you some ideas of what you could use it for.
No functionality has been removed and it is still possible to use RenderDoc as a standalone python module, but the documentation covers the common case of users wanting to script the RenderDoc UI itself.
Python Breaking API changes
- GetDefaultCaptureOptions has been removed, CaptureOptions is now initialised to the defaults when created.
- ActionDescription's members next and previous have been renamed to nextAction and previousAction to avoid a clash with internal swig members. …
