About aicommit

A fast, opinionated CLI that generates Git commit messages and reviews staged diffs using AI. Written in Rust, installed as aic

What's new in 0.0.9

Release focused on a polished terminal interface, quieter push flows, and resilient large-diff generation.
Terminal Interface Polish
The commit, review, and PR transcripts now read as one visual language with every fact printed once.
- One session header per run (previously "Commit session" printed twice), with the staging preflight rendered as dim sub-steps beneath it and the staged-file list shown exactly once.
- Branch and provider/model metadata collapse into a single row, and the redundant "Sending to provider/model" line is gone.
- Interactive prompts share aic's glyph vocabulary (? pending, ✔ answered, ❯ highlighted option) via a global prompt theme, and sections/cards manage their own vertical spacing for a consistent rhythm.
- The pre-commit upstream fetch shows a "Checking branch sync" spinner instead of stalling silently.
- Choosing Edit on a generated commit message opens $EDITOR with the message preloaded (matching the split flow) instead of a single-line inline prompt.
- aic models marks the active model with ❯ in the shared list style, and aic log aligns the before/after subjects in its comparison view.
Quieter Push Flow
- The push prompt shows a short remote label ([GitHub] origin) instead of the full URL, and success prints Pushed main → origin.
- The final Commit created summary shows the short hash, branch, pushed to origin (GitHub), and a +added −removed diffstat parsed from the commit output.
- In terminals with OSC-8 hyperlink support, the hash links to the commit page on GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket (driven by the new commit_path field in git_hosts.toml).
- Raw git output is no longer re-echoed after successful commits and pushes; it still appears on failures and recovery flows.
Large-Diff Generation Hardening
- Commit generation no longer appears to hang on very large staged diffs: the token counter now builds its encoder once per process instead of on every call, and diff splitting runs in a single pass (previously minutes to hours of CPU on multi-MB diffs; now seconds).
- Local CLI providers (claude-code, codex, copilot) no longer deadlock when the prompt exceeds the OS pipe buffer (~64 KiB): the prompt is written to the child process from a dedicated thread while its output is drained concurrently. …

Release focused on local CLI provider flexibility, more resilient commit flows, and smoother release automation.
GitHub Copilot CLI Provider
aic now supports copilot as a first-class local CLI provider alongside claude-code and codex.
- Commit generation, staged reviews, PR drafting, log rewriting, setup, and model listing can all reuse an installed GitHub Copilot CLI.
- Local CLI-provider workflows no longer depend on configuring AIC_API_KEY when copilot is selected.
- Provider selection stays consistent with the existing aic command surface and setup flow.
Commit Workflow Hardening
The core commit flow is more forgiving when Git state or diff readability gets messy.
- aic now falls back to staged Git change metadata when every staged file is filtered out of the readable diff, which keeps commit drafting working for binary-only or asset-only changes.
- Push-aware flows now check whether the tracked branch is behind or diverged before creating a new commit, so sync problems are caught earlier.
- Sync failures, rejected pushes, and rebase issues now include AI-assisted Git recovery guidance while Git itself remains the source of truth for fetch, rebase, and conflict detection.
Release Automation
The post-release distribution pipeline is easier to reuse and easier to debug.
- The Homebrew tap updater and WinGet updater workflows are now reusable workflows that can still be run manually. …

aicommit v0.0.7 - Polished Flow
Release focused on interactive CLI polish and automated Windows release packaging.
Interactive CLI polish
The interactive aic flows now share a more polished transcript-style interface:
- compact file summaries, bordered commit and draft previews, clearer action labels, and cleaner commit/push status output
- shared UI helpers across commit, review, pr, history, setup, models, config, and hook-related terminal output
- an interactive staged-file preflight that can unstage selected files before commit generation
- refreshed aic review output rendered as terminal markdown with a short completion summary
- fixes for repositories before the first commit, smoother empty-selection handling, and clearer interactive-terminal staging behaviour
Release automation
- WinGet submission now runs from the main tag release pipeline after GitHub Releases are published, matching the existing Homebrew tap automation.
- The Manual WinGet Recovery workflow remains available for rerunning a specific release tag when package propagation or external validation needs a second pass.
Install
macOS users can install with Homebrew:
brew install russmckendrick/tap/aicommit
Windows users can install with WinGet:
winget install --id RussMckendrick.Aicommit -e
Pre-built binaries are published for Linux, macOS, and Windows from GitHub Releases. The installed executable is aic.
Notes
- The package name remains aicommit; the public CLI command remains aic. …
