Microsoft Teams decides you are "Away" by watching your keyboard and mouse. After a few minutes without input it changes your status and your screen goes dark. It does not know whether you actually left.
You might be reading a long document, testing something on a phone or tablet, sketching on paper, or talking to the person at the next desk. In every one of those cases you are working, and Teams tells your colleagues you are not.
NeverAway corrects that, and it does the opposite half too: at an hour you choose it closes Teams, so still being logged in late does not read as an invitation to be interrupted.
How it works - Sends a one-pixel mouse movement or an F15 key press, but only after you have genuinely stopped touching the machine. While you are typing it does nothing. - Asks Windows not to blank the display while it is running. - Opens and closes Teams and Zoom on a weekly schedule you set. - Will not close Teams if the application looks busy; the scheduled close waits instead.
Privacy It reads no messages, calls, files, screen contents or keystrokes. Its only network traffic is a licence check to neverawayteams.com carrying a hardware-derived identifier, plus optional weather and public-IP lookups you can switch off.
Portable: a single signed executable. No installer, and nothing written outside %LOCALAPPDATA%\NeverAway.
What's new in 2.0.10
The free and paid versions now differ where it matters.
- Scheduling, application control and the Info Hub are shown as premium rather than left open. The engine already declined to run them without a paid plan, but every control was editable, so a free user could set up a week of automation and watch nothing happen. They are now visibly locked, in place, and selecting one shows what the plans are. - Everything the free version is entitled to stays fully usable and configurable: keeping your status awake, how often and how it signals, the idle threshold, the session cap, whether the display is kept awake, the activity list, and how the window itself behaves. - The version you are running is shown in Settings, under "Account and support", directly above the update check - the first thing support asks for, and now visible whatever your plan. It is read from the build itself rather than written into the source, so it cannot disagree with the executable it is printed in. - "Read more" on a news item opened a web address that no longer exists, so nothing happened. It now opens the same news page as the shortcut. - The window no longer describes itself as LIMITED, with "account verification unavailable" underneath, to somebody on the free plan whose account had verified perfectly well and whose status was being kept awake the whole time. Two false statements in the colour of a fault, next to a product that was working. It now reports the presence it is actually keeping, and what the plan does not include is said once, where it belongs. - The funding invitation shows how much of the month is covered as a percentage, instead of the amounts raised and owed.
Carried forward from 2.0.7 - fixes for waking from sleep, and for the scheduled close reporting a meeting that was not happening:
- Waking the machine brings presence back. It relied on the resume notification Windows sends for the classic sleep states, which a machine using Modern Standby - the low-power idle most recent laptops use - may never send at all. When it did not arrive, nothing turned presence back on: the machine was awake, the application was sitting there inactive, and only restarting it helped. How long the machine was suspended is now measured from Windows' own accounting, which exists on every machine and is the same for sleep, hibernation and Modern Standby. …
