About PC GamePak

A cartridge is a small drive in a pocketable enclosure with a game on it. Plug
it into a USB port and a launcher appears showing the game's cover art, with a
Play button and an Eject button.

A cartridge is an ordinary drive with a cartridge.conf text file at its root.
There are no scripts to write and nothing to allowlist, because nothing on a
cartridge is ever executed automatically - pressing Play is the gate.

Includes a wizard (pc-gamepak --create) that formats a drive, copies a game
onto it, fetches cover art, and checks every file it wrote by reading the
cartridge back and comparing CRC-32 sums.

What's new in 1.1.0

Saves, playtime and compiled shaders now travel on the cartridge, so a game
carries its progress between machines. Save folders are found from Ludusavi's
list, including Steam Cloud saves and games that save to the registry.

A drive can be a memory card that carries only saves, or a cartridge can be
both. New cartridges format as NTFS by default. A cartridge can say what
platform it is for. Eject names whatever is still using the drive.

WinGet installs the two executables and puts them on PATH. It cannot register
the watcher's logon task, so a cartridge will not open its launcher on insert
until you run the installer once:

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File install.ps1 -Mode Watcher

install.ps1 ships in the windows\ folder of the installed package.

PC GamePak version history

1.0.0 Sep 1, 2026

First release.

The wizard
needs none of that and works immediately:

pc-gamepak --create
