About RAG Assistant for Zotero

RAG tooling, reimagined with researchers in mind. This open-source app lets Zotero users do literature discovery and review via semantic search of their PDF collections, drawing from both classic RAG and library science. It indexes the full text of the PDFs in your Zotero library and searches it by meaning and by keyword. Ask for a topic, a title, or an author and year, and it returns a ranked bibliography of the items in your library that bear on it, with the passages that matched, one click from the PDF at that page in Zotero. Limits in your query (years, authors, tags, collections, kinds of item) become filters you can remove. Group and narrow the list, follow references and citations, pin passages, and export APA, BibTeX, RIS or a reading guide. No language model is needed; with one, local through Ollama or LM Studio or a cloud provider, it also reads harder queries, suggests next searches, names groups of results, and can answer questions from your library with citations. Works fully offline with a local model, so sensitive documents never leave your computer.

What's new in 0.7.2

Upgrading from 0.7.1
Nothing to run. Settings, sessions, pins, the query log and the index are untouched; the profile's desk file gains a context list.

Added

  • A context folder for RAG Chat. "Add to context" on a result's evidence, "Add all to context" on the list and "Add pinned to context" on the reading list put items, with their strongest matched passage, into a folder shown above the RAG Chat question box. The items you tick there are the only ones RAG Chat answers from. The folder is kept per profile. This replaces "Chat about this / these / pinned", which switched screens without saying what had happened, and it needs no model.
  • The active model in the header, with a green or red dot: "gemma3:4b selected", or "(Not running)" when a local server is down or does not list the model; the tooltip carries the provider's own error. Checked on load, when the model settings change, and once a minute.

Changed

  • The interface was redone for hierarchy. One typeface for the interface (the serif stays for references), a five-step type scale, sentence-case labels, and three surfaces: the frame, the side panels and the canvas. The selected result is a card. The results toolbar is one row of one kind of control. Row actions moved to the Evidence panel, so the list no longer shifts while you arrow through it. The reading list sits folded at the top of Evidence, and "Read as" folds to one line.
  • Search and RAG Chat share one shell. A Search | RAG Chat switch beside the mode's own controls replaces "Switch to chat"; the same rail, panels and header serve both. RAG Chat shows the session title above the conversation and its Scope panel in the left column. "Chat" is "RAG Chat" throughout.
  • The app name moved to the right of the header beside Settings, without the logo mark. The chat column is one colour, and the context folder is framed, green once it holds something.
  • Package descriptions come from package.json. The winget manifest, the Homebrew cask, the Debian control file and the desktop entry still described the March chat app. The release jobs now take the short and long description, keywords, licence and URLs from package.json, and the winget release notes from this file. …
