Tandem Commander is an open-source two-panel (dual-pane) file manager for Windows. It is a native application - there is no runtime to install and it starts instantly.
Both panels show a directory, and every operation - copy, move, delete, rename, pack, unpack, compare - works between them and can be driven entirely from the keyboard. Common archive formats are browsed like ordinary folders. A plugin architecture adds file viewers, FTP and SFTP clients, checksum tools, a Markdown viewer and more.
It offers full Unicode and long-path support, a dark theme, sync-status badges for cloud-synced folders, and a configurable command shell.
Tandem Commander is built with AI-assisted, spec-driven development under human direction and review, and is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind.
What's new in 0.2.0
Build 195. Feature release. Quick search finds the typed text anywhere in a name, also without its accents, and shows only the matching items. Settings of Altap Salamander and Open Salamander can be imported after a preview; panel tabs get optional browser-like shortcuts and Reopen Closed Tab; the Markdown Viewer can use the whole window. Settings move once to a key that no longer changes with the version - going back to 0.1.x is not supported. Unpack with "Delete archive after unpacking" no longer deletes a disc image or a TAR, cpio or rpm archive that was not extracted whole, and ways of losing data in the Registry Editor, ZIP, FTP and SFTP are closed. The Desktop view's column headers read correctly on a non-English Windows, Linux CD images show their real names, and long names are refused, never cut.
Build 194. Fixes for the problems reported on GitHub after 0.1.9, and for what checking those fixes found. Several ways of losing files are closed: deleting a link in a very deep folder emptied the folder it points to, a name that is another file's short name could overwrite that file, and an archive opened through a drive letter that was pointed elsewhere could be changed in place of another. Shortcuts open their targets, a server name lists its shared folders, the program starts again on older Windows, and messages, menus and the plug-ins show names in any language readably. Long names are kept whole or refused, never cut; SFTP no longer fails about one connection in 256.
0.1.9Oct 7, 2026
Build 193. Feature release. The program now tells you when a newer version has been published: on by default, one request to GitHub about once a day, nothing about you or your computer is sent, and one option turns it off. RAR archives open and unpack without installing anything, on a 7-Zip engine updated from 16.04 to 26.03. External archivers, which never started in any earlier release, work; the MS-DOS archivers are gone. A long series of fixes ends silent data loss around archives and file operations, makes file names, passwords and typed text in any script work in the program and its plugins, opens archives and folders at very long paths, and makes PictView's Save As save again. The privacy defects found while writing the privacy statement are fixed. Plugin interface 107; plugins built for earlier versions keep working.
0.1.7Aug 29, 2026
Build 191. Installer fix. Unattended installation - /VERYSILENT and /SILENT - works for the first time; it had been failing outright since version 0.1.0. Nothing in the application itself changed from 0.1.6: the source code is identical, only the installer script and the build number differ.
